Uploaded new version unsucessful
[edit]Hi, I decided to add unblurred higher quality images to a screenshot I uploaded last year.
The Talhenbont Hall floor plan file I added last year has been replaced, but is still showing up as the current image as it's blurred and doesn't zoom in well. I first added a better screenshot of a book, however the image was still blurred. I then unblurred the image, but when I uploaded the new image, it still didn't upload correctly, so I reverted twice without success, and added a new file again, but still the latest uploaded image is of the first original upload of low quality which does not zoom correctly. Any idea please as to why the current image isn't uploaded correctly and is still using the original upload ? Please take a look at this similar image which I uploaded successfully as a newly unblurred upgraded image. Whilst a third image also has the same issue of not fully uploading the newer unblurred screenshot. You just have to compare image sizes, now over 1mb compared to before to see the uploads were successful, just they are not being displayed correctly. Any ideas how to fix this issue please ?? Cltjames (talk) 01:54, 27 September 2024 (UTC)
- Not to worry, please ignore the question. It took about a week for the upload to update, now the image uploaded is represented by the latest version in better quality and without blur. Cltjames (talk) 22:02, 5 October 2024 (UTC)

Categorisation question
[edit]What is the best place for a discussion about Commons categories? I am slowly chipping away at tidying and better organizing c:Category:Industrial design and related categories – and, I hope, if successful, improving internal query results for "industrial design" (which, as of today, shows many irrelevant images interspersed with the useful/accurate information). Most of my experience is in English wikipedia and Wikidata, although I do have some useful experience here in Commons too. I'm looking for general technical advice, as well as specific guidance on best practice for category optimisation. Cheers, Cl3phact0 (talk) 09:01, 3 October 2024 (UTC)
Use of photos
[edit]I have a photo of mine which I want to use in a wikipedia story (bio) that I contributed to create. The photo or photos have been removed over and over. How can I do it right? It's my photo and I have all the rights and it can be use for public use. How can I put an end to this situation? Montanero2024 (talk) 14:13, 3 October 2024 (UTC)
- This is fascinating because you have only two uploads (File:Mel Granda.jpg stolen from here and File:Carolina Rosario.jpg stolen from here), yet you say "the photo or photos have been removed over and over". (underline added) Bleff, who was blocked for deliberate license laundering, effectively a form of sockpuppetry, also had an interest in these two completely unrelated (journalist and singer) subjects--File:Mel Granda cantante.jpg and File:Carolina Rosario, periodista.jpeg . Should we take this as an admission of sock or meatpuppetry? Эlcobbola talk 14:33, 3 October 2024 (UTC)

nameyou might be acting as a sockpuppet. These are both highly professional pictures, on two very different public individuals' Facebook accounts, with no credit to the photographer. The copyright may belong to the photographer or may have been transferred to the individuals photographed, given that they used them. Are you the photographer who is apparently Josué Ricardo Rivas? - @Montanero2024 I've left a message with the publicist, Josué Ricardo Rivas, that Bleff credited with ownership of these photos, on Instagram. Importing caption from image metadata
[edit]The upload wizard will import an image's description from its XMP description (XMP::dc\description\Description). Is there a way to do the same with the caption? One could expect XMP headline (XMP::photoshop\Headline\Headline) or - somewhat wrongly - XMP title (XMP::dc\title\Title) to be candidates, but neither are imported by the wizard. --Cephyr~commonswiki (talk) 16:53, 3 October 2024 (UTC)
Arbitrary votes in deletion requests

- Regardless of the nudity aspect, these pictures are selfies, and the arguments just seem like every other argument for justifying selfies on Commons. Every selfie is unique and can be used to illustrate all sorts of things. Ultimately for our purposes, it's just additional junk. The fact that we already have a massive abundance of nudes that our people have to look through is simply icing on the cake. Your identity being attached to the selfies is meaningless, unless you happen to be someone who is notable to have a page on Wikipedia. Bastique ☎ appelez-moi! 22:30, 3 October 2024 (UTC)

How can I find out the copyright license of Geni.com?
[edit][1]https://www.geni.com/company/terms_of_use I'm not sure what copyright license they use, I'm trying to upload this image to use in my Wikipedia article about him. Tylermack999 (talk) 05:23, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Tylermack999 I'm not very familiar with geni.com, all that image page says is "© 2024 Geni.com" which on the face of it says "can't be on Commons". I suppose you could try to ask the geni-uploader for additional info about date and country of origin. However, since the subject is dead, you can consider uploading it on en-WP as a non-free file at WP:FUW and use it as leadimage, BUT you can only do that when your draft is in mainspace (is an actual article). And you need better sources than wikidata for that draft. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:07, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
Question about editing distorted candidate images licensed by the TSE (Supreme Electoral Court of Brazil)
[edit]Hello everyone,
I have a question regarding some images of candidates that have been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons during the election period. Thanks to the Tribunal Superior Eleitoral (TSE), which allows the inclusion of candidate photos under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license, thousands of images have been added to the platform, which is correct since they are properly licensed.
However, I noticed that some of these images, such as those of Pablo Marçal and his running mate Antonia de Jesus, have visible distortions that affect their quality. Here are the examples:
File:2024 PABLO MARÇAL CANDIDATO PREFEITO SP SAO PAULO TSE (250001978066).jpg and File:2024 ANTONIA DE JESUS CANDIDATO VICE-PREFEITO SP SAO PAULO TSE (250001978067).jpg.
The license states:
Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license
You are free to:
- Share – copy, distribute, and transmit the work
- Adapt – remix, transform, and build upon the material Under the following conditions:
- Attribution – You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made.
I understand that, according to this license, I am allowed to adapt the image as long as proper credit is given. However, I had a previous experience with a photo of a U.S. Senate candidate from West Virginia. The image, taken from a YouTube screenshot, was blurry. I used an AI tool to enhance the quality, but my edit was reverted, as community members preferred to keep the original version.
My question is: for these distorted candidate images, can I edit them to improve their visual quality by adjusting proportions and resizing in Photoshop and then upload them as new versions on Wikimedia Commons? Or should I leave them as originally uploaded to avoid possible reversion?
Thank you in advance for your time and any clarification you can provide.
Best regards, Sailoratlantis (talk) 07:52, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- I don't believe we have a solid policy on AI upscaling or clarifying. I don't see anything about it in COM:AI, but AI improved photograph should be clearly labeled as such, including categorization, and they should generally not be used to substitute for the original image unless it is clear to the end user that it is an AI-improved image. Hopefully we'll get a template for it soon. Bastique ☎ appelez-moi! 14:50, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- Just to be clear, AI "improvements" often winds up distorting the subject in ways that are obvious to some people but not to others, so great care must be used in using these. And they should always be uploaded as separate images to give the end user the possibility of choosing which version they want to use. Bastique ☎ appelez-moi! 14:52, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
Incorrect Wikidata item associated with a category
[edit]Category:Frida Beckman contains one photo, of a professor by that name. It is associated with a Wikidata item (wikidata:Q19631570), which represents a different person (an actor) by the same name. I've tried to disentangle them by removing the Wikidata infobox from the category, and by removing the Commons category from the Wikidata item, but there has to be something I'm doing wrong because bots always show up to undo my edits! Is this something that can be fixed at Commons, or do I have to try to understand how to split items over at Wikidata? --Bonadea (talk) 20:55, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- It seems there's only one bot doing an edit war in the Commons category, after and probably because a human user, User:ZI Jony, reinserted the wrong information in the Wikidata page. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:17, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- Bonadea and Asclepias, removing a sitelink by IP user and didn’t reconnect to anywhere else consider as vandalism! Bonadea, I'd request you that don’t just remove information if that's not correct, instead find the correct item and move/reconnect into the correct item. However, category and photo linked on correct item (d:Q122890010), and photo added on Frida Beckman's article on Swedish Wikipedia. Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 02:13, 5 October 2024 (UTC)
how do I use a promotional photo in wiki article that was given to media and public
[edit]I have several glossy promotional photos of equipment (one also contains a person) given to media and public in 1980's with permission to use them at the time. They gave them away at trade shows without any copyright markings. They were keen to promote the technology and product. The company that gave the photos away ceased to operate ~ 1981 and was later dissolved. One photo contains an image of a person who is deceased ~ 1991. For purpose of putting the photo with person in a wiki article, the face of the person could be blurred out if there is no way to publish it otherwise. is that OK. . Alternately I could seekl permission from the family to publish. note that This photo is already in circulation on the web and in print because it was a promotional glossy BW photo given to anyone that wanted to use it ~ 1980.

- At least one other auction house describes this painting as a portrait of Richelieu, commander of the French army at the siege of La Rochelle, oil on paper laid on canvas, attributed to Claude Deruet.[3] The similarity of the descriptions points to a common source, which may have been the owner, who has an interest in describing it in terms most likely to attract high bids. Another auction house, which sold an almost identical painting (at an unknown date, but apparently earlier than 2022) for a mere € 1.250, offered a very different description and attribution, in which this is the portrait of an anonymous gentleman, executed by an anonymous painter from the circle of Frans Pourbus the Younger.[4] I don't know which of the two is more plausible, and possibly one is a copy of tbe other by a different artist, but auction houses, like the owners offering goods for sale, have an interest in achieving high highest bids and are not necessarily the most reliable experts. --Lambiam 18:55, 6 October 2024 (UTC)

Creating a collection

- Hi, could you please be more specific about what you're trying to do? See Commons:First steps. Are you planning to upload a series of photos you took, or images from elsewhere? - I want to create a gallery of images of advertisements from an archive of old books. EngProff (talk) 12:20, 8 October 2024 (UTC)
- That sounds useful. Make sure that the images from "old books" are out of copyright (in the US law and the country of origin; Commons:Copyright rules by territory has more info on the latter) and are in project scope. Note we have a good deal of advertisements arranged in categories. For best results take a little time to familiarize yourself with what Commons already has - for example categories for Advertisements by year, Advertisements by country (and some intersecting categories, for example Category:1910 advertisements in the United States), and Category:Advertising by product. See if this answers your question? Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 17:44, 8 October 2024 (UTC)

- @JerryKB: It sounds like you want to upload this document so that you can cite it as a source for some Wikipedia article; there, however, is no need for you to do such a thing as explained in en:WP:PUBLISHED and en:WP:PUBLISH. English Wikipedia doesn't require that sources be available online; it only requires that they be (1) reliable (as defined by English Wikipedia), (2) published and (3) reasonably accessible so that they can be verified. If this document can be accessed for verification by someone who wants to make a reasonable effort to do so, then that's enough for Wikipedia; if, on the other hand, the document is part of a private collection or is maintained in a way that makes verifying it quite hard, then it doesn't have much value to Wikipedia as reliable source and probably shouldn't be cited as such. Finally, printed matter such as personal letters, organizational documents, etc. can also be eligible for copyright protection depending upon the copyright laws of the country of first publication. Commons can only host the content if it's within the public domain or its copyright holder has released it under an acceptable free license. If neither of these two things can be verified, you shouldn't upload the document. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:20, 8 October 2024 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks for the comprehensive answer. I received this document, copy (among other documents) in my capacity as a board member of the organization. I intend to upload the document in my blog, so then the rules have been followed if I understand you correctly JerryKB (talk) 03:37, 8 October 2024 (UTC)

- Because Commons is not an encyclopedia, We have no reason to allow change.org to be linked here. It's only used for vandalism/attack articles. Very, very few petitions are notable enough to have an article about them. All the Best -- Chuck Talk 21:24, 7 October 2024 (UTC)

Uploading logos of defunct retail chains for Wikipedia articles

- To upload them here, you'll need to confirm that they're out of copyright in the US and in their country of origin (see Commons:Copyright rules by territory); simpler logos might be covered under {{PD-textlogo}}. If the logos aren't allowed here, you can probably upload them to Wikipedia following their rules for non-free content. —CalendulaAsteraceae (talk • contribs) 19:05, 9 October 2024 (UTC)

Image is missing (or not visible)
[edit]Maybe more of a mystery than a problem ... I uploaded the image File:Volvo C202 Kirseberg.jpg yesterday. I put it in Category:Volvo C202. After logging out it happens when looking at Category:Volvo C202 my image is missing (or not visible). Not least when looking at that category on my IPad. Yet still looking at the Ipad, I can see my image in the other categories I put it in. Thanks! Lars A (talk) 09:56, 10 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Lars A Could this be a Wikipedia:Bypass your cache related problem? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 12:31, 10 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for replying! Now I looked again. I normally use Ubuntu and Firefox and now, remaining logged out, looking at Category:Volvo C202, my image is invisible or missing. Your suggestion is to re-dowload the page, afresh. I try that both on the Ipad and on Firefox with nothing happening. Image still missing. I'm not an expert at all, but if this was the cause, how is it then that once I log on in Firefox my image is suddenly visible? The category looks just the same, only after logging on there are now instead of 11 images, 12 images visible, mine included. Lars A (talk) 13:30, 10 October 2024 (UTC)

Error when trying to confirm promotion a QI candidate
[edit]Hi,
I'm trying to submit and confirm a QI candidate for promotion.
When I click "confirm", I get the following popup message "API returned error code 'missingparam' : At least one of the parameters "text", "appendtext", "prependtext" and "undo" is required."
The popup quickly fades away, but the confirm page simply hangs without actually promoting.
I also tried to add a comment (rather than promoting) to the image that I was trying to promote, but I get the same error.
I'd like to "experiment" and see if I get the same error with other QI candidates, but I'd prefer not to cavalierly submit recommendations on that page.
I can see that this error has been noted before by User:Plozessor (Commons:Quality images candidates/Archives December 17 2023), but unclear what the issue was.
Anyway, If anyone has suggestions, please let me know.

Fernando Ortiz photo
[edit]Hi I would like to use a picture of the Cuban Scholar Fernanfo Oritz for his wikipedia page in english and spanish. I have found a photo that has this licence "photograph of a Cuban stamp c. 1981 with an image of Fernando Ortiz, © Mark Markau/123rf.com" that is the cover of this book Fernando Ortiz: Caribbean and Mediterranean Counterpoints, edited by Stephan Palmié, is licensed under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 https://creativecommons. org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/legalcode. I know the book has a CC BY-NC-ND licence but I am not sure about the image. The image is also a stamp so I don't know if I can use it. Dupont96 (talk) 14:01, 13 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Dupont96: Com:Cuba suggests that a 1981 Cuban postage stamp is still in copyright both in Cuba and the USA, so cannot be uploaded to Commons. Copyright in the book is irrelevant, and there is no new copyright in photographing a 2D object like a stamp.
- Oritz is long-dead, so you may be able to use the image that was used on the stamp on en.Wikipedia, under that project's fair use criteria (es.Wikipedia does not allow such images). Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:06, 13 October 2024 (UTC)
what is the rule on uploading images from youtube videos?

- @Terrarian9111: It's the same as for any other image (or media) - is it under a compatible licence, or free from copyright for some other reason?
